Planting Justice: A Garden Designed to Empower Youth in a Juvenile Detention Facility

How does interacting with nature mitigate the harm of incarceration and cultivate hope? How do prison gardens ignite a sense of personal power? This presentation discussed how transforming a small, fully caged-in outdoor area into a therapeutic garden for incarcerated youth, not only reclaimed the physical space but also provided a new experience of autonomy for children ensnared in the prison-industrial complex.

Pro Bono Projects

My clients hire me to create outdoor sanctuaries and provide separation from the chaos of the outside world. But access to gardens is becoming increasingly privileged. What about those who can’t afford to buy themselves this peace of mind?

The work I do on a pro bono basis often inspires me. Sharing my knowledge and expertise with different communities broadens my understanding and perspective. It’s a way to gain insight into diverse experiences and needs, which enriches my worldview. Knowing that my work makes a positive impact for those who might not otherwise have access to gardens is incredibly fulfilling.
